Independent Safeguarding Authority
The government’s new Vetting and Barring Scheme begins on 12 October 2009. The scheme is intended to provide extra protection for children and vulnerable adults. It does not replace the CRB checks, but complements them by aiming to ensure that no unsuitable person works with children and vulnerable adults.
The scheme is being implemented in stages with the main changes taking place next year. However, amongst other changes, from this October, there is a duty for employers to refer to the ISA anyone who may pose a risk to vulnerable groups. There are also criminal penalties if employers knowingly employ ‘barred’ individuals to work with vulnerable groups.
The Churches Child Protection Advisory Service, in association with the ISA, is running a series of roadshows to explain the new system. These roadshows will also provide an opportunity to contribute to the new draft guidance for faith organisations that is currently being drawn up by the ISA.
