A Christian Response to The Good Childhood Inquiry

Tuesday 28th April 2009, King’s Cross Baptist Church WC1X 9EP

The trustees are pleased to send you an invitation to the eighth CCCF Annual Forum at which we are seeking to mobilise support for a Christian coalition to work towards a better world for our children.

At the beginning of February a major independent report, The Good Childhood Inquiry was published.  It calls for a sea-change in our attitudes towards children citing “excessive individualism” as a root cause of many deep-seated problems.  Family break up, unprincipled advertising aimed at children, competition in education, and income inequality all combine to undermine the well-being of children and young people. Dr Rowan Williams described our society as “tone deaf to the real requirements of children”.

At the heart of the mission of the Christian Child Care Forum is a desire to promote a vision of contemporary society in which children and young people have a rightful place, and a commitment to respond in love, from common Christian perspectives, to needs of children and families. We have therefore supported The Children’s Society in its work to commission this inquiry.

At this year’s Annual Forum we are focusing on a specifically Christian response to the study, informed by theological, professional, and practice-based knowledge and experience.  The aim is to identify distinctively Christian perspectives, which will provide a base for a Christian-led coalition to act on the findings.

The Chair for the day will be Baroness Howarth, and invited speakers include Jim Davis, a member of the Inquiry team; Haddon Willmer, Emeritus Professor of Theology; Stephen Oliver, Bishop of Stepney; Jon Kuhrt, Community Mission Director at Livability; and Stephen Timms, Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

There are two booking forms enclosed with this invitation: one for individuals attending; the other for those wishing to book an exhibition stand.

See the CCCF website for up to date information about the event and also CCCF news: www.christianchildcareforum.org.uk
